Notice that the rug should be large enough to keep the chairs atop the rug when guests are seated at the table. Some rooms do not permit rugs long enough to permit this with the table fully expanded, but in our experience 8x10 is the minimum standard rug size to consider.

(BrandonRugs.com) There's a better way than trial-and-error to figure out the correct size runner to complete your stairway. (In the example here, there's no way sadly to stretch that lovely runner to fit.) A quick rule of thumb to get the right size is to count the number of treads multiply by 1.5 and add 6". That result covers the stairway from the top riser (under the nose of the next floor's landing) to the bottom step's riser finishing just at the floor. (BrandonRugs.com) Hand-knotted oriental-rug runners were purchased from Brandon Oriental Rugs by our New Hope, PA customers in 2002 for their previous home. We reinstalled them in this their new home after having them recut to fit the new home's split staircase. In their fifteenth year of heavy stairway traffic by the family and their many beloved dogs, and still looking as good as they did on day one. "Quality reveals itself, and endures."
