Rare Persian carpet sold for $33.7 million in New York City

This is a nominal 6x9 rug that is now the record holder for the highest dollar amount ever paid at auction for a hand-knotted oriental rug.
It's nice to see that REAL handmade rugs are demonstrating value to collectors commensurate with other fine quality artworks (at least insofar as such value is proven by international auction results.)

Ancient Persian rug once owned by American billionaire set to go on sale at Sothebys in June for £5m

Here's more evidence that a fine rug is not "just a rug", and offers its owner much more than a mere floor covering.
This isn't the immediate goal for every rug buyer of course, but it CAN BE a long term bonus for owning a well-chosen rug.

  • Exquisite handwoven carpet is more than 360 years old.
  • Was bought by industrialist William Clark in Paris in early 1900s.
  • Carpet is being sold at Sotheby's (New York) in June to raise money for museum.
